Electrical Panel Replacement in Pleasanton & the Tri-Valley

Is Your Panel Putting Your Insurance — or Your Home — at Risk?

Many Tri-Valley homeowners don't know their electrical panel is a problem until their insurance company tells them. Certain older panels are no longer covered by most carriers. Others are a fire risk hiding behind a closed door.

Chase Electric replaces outdated, unsafe, and uninsurable electrical panels for homeowners throughout Pleasanton and the Tri-Valley. We evaluate honestly, explain clearly, and replace your panel right the first time.

Panels Insurance Companies Won't Cover

If your home has one of these panels, your insurer may require replacement before renewing or deny coverage entirely.

Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) / Stab-Lok

Common in homes built between the 1950s and 1980s. These breakers have a documented history of failing to trip during overloads and short circuits — a leading cause of electrical fires. Most carriers will not insure a home with an FPE panel.

Zinsco / GTE-Sylvania

Popular in the 1970s. The breakers are prone to melting and fusing to the bus bar, which means they can never trip — even during a dangerous fault. Extremely difficult to insure.

Split-Bus Panels

These older panels have no single main breaker to shut off all power at once. Many insurers consider them obsolete and require replacement before issuing a policy.

Undersized Panels with Aluminum Wiring (60A or 100A service)

Older homes with aluminum branch circuit wiring connected to low-capacity panels are frequently flagged by insurers. The combination creates elevated fire risk.

Understanding the Types of Electrical Panels

Main Breaker Panel (Load Center)

The standard in modern homes. A single main breaker controls all power, with individual circuit breakers protecting each branch circuit. When you replace an outdated panel, this is what it's replaced with.

Subpanel (Secondary Distribution Panel)

A subpanel receives power from the main panel and distributes it to a specific area — a garage, ADU, workshop, or addition. It extends capacity; it doesn't replace the main panel.

Fuse Box

Found in homes built before the 1960s. Fuses blow and need replacement rather than resetting. Generally too low in capacity for modern electrical loads and considered obsolete by most insurers.

Tandem / Double-Stuff Breakers

Some panels support two circuits in one breaker slot. Legitimate in the right panel — a code violation in one that doesn't support them.

SPAN Smart Panel

A next-generation panel that replaces a standard breaker box and adds circuit-level control, real-time energy monitoring, and solar/battery integration. Chase Electric is a certified SPAN installer. For full details, visit our dedicated SPAN Smart Panel page.
